He has a special space suit but this mission is super dangerous, as in life threatening.

Ina May Gaskin may be one of my top five favorite people in the world. This super bright, well-spoken and wise midwife has been the face of non-hospital births in this country for decades.

I’ve seen her speak in documentaries before, but Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and the Farm Midwives was a behind-the-scenes look at Ina’s personal life and her advocacy I’d never come across.

Her book, Spiritual Midwifery, first printed in 1976 and now in its 4th edition, was my guide to pregnancy and childbirth when I had my first daughter four years ago with Motherwise Community Birth Center.

The movie is the real life version of so many of the kinds of stories that appear in that book. Gaskin attends breech births, births where the baby’s shoulder is stuck, water births, and births where the mother delivers her baby herself with midwives simply around for support. All this is shown in the film in graphic real life birth scenes.

Jim Gross, owner of Bend Radio Group, has launched a petition online at the website change.org to draw attention to the city’s noise ordinance, which was revised earlier this summer.

You can find the petition at keepbendalive.org.

The new noise ordinance, which provides more clarity to the rules about acceptable noise in the city limits, has been criticized by musicians, music venue owners and, now, others in the community who conduct live events, such as Gross.

Bend City Council members said last night and at a meeting two weeks ago that they hear and understand the concerns over the noise ordinance and will consider amending the law at a council meeting on Oct. 17.

The petition launched by Gross is not a formal petition recommending a specific vote be conducted in the city of Bend over the ordinance, said Robyn Christie, city of Bend recorder. For that to have been the case, the petitioners would have submitted language of a ballot measure to the city attorney. The attorney would have responded with a ballot title, and after review by the Deschutes County Circuit Court, the petitioners could begin collecting signatures to put the ballot measure to a vote, she said.

Last week, a curious Craigslist ad about a new record store opening up in town, was posted right under my nose.

So, I immediately made my way to Recycle Music L.L.C. on the corner of Arizona and Bond street, across from Strictly Organic Coffee and popped in for a visit.

I was greeted by the establishment's owner Keith, and we started talking about music and the opening of his store. He brought up his love for early Jayhawks music as well as Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo while he showed me around the new digs and I picked out a Ryan Adams record to purchase.

Got nothing to do tonight and have a real thing for iconic flicks?

If yes, you need to get yourself down to Regal Cinemas in the Old Mill to see the 50th Anniversary of Lawrence of Arabia. The film was nominated for or won more than a dozen awards, including an Oscar, when it was released in 1962.

This version of the film has been digitally restored from the original 65 mm negative. Expect behind-the-scenes coverage of the filming, extra footage and interviews.

7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

If you only go to ONE movie during the entire FOUR days of BendFilm, go see Deadfall.

Documentaries are great and all, but sometimes we all crave the Hollywood-type movie, without all the Hollywood bullshit. This is it. It's full of action, sex, and—somewhat rare for BendFilm—big-time actors.

Highwayman Kris Kristofferson and Academy Award winner Sissy Spacek star as the parents of troubled ex-boxer, Jay (Charlie Hunnam) who meets up with mega-babe and fugitive-on-the-run Olivia Wilde (pictured at right). Guns, suspense, sexiness, intrigue...what more could you want? Plot? Yeah, it's got that too.

See this movie. Screening Friday, Oct 12 at 5:30pm.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this video
