Marz On The Move?

Bend’s restaurant scene, particularly downtown, has seen more than its fair share of turnover in the past few years. Thankfully where restaurants have disappeared others have been quick to take their places – at least in most instances. That appears to the be the case, or something like it at least, with the latest spin of the culinary carousel, which reportedly has the owners of the well established Marz handing control of the restaurant to Gavin McMichael of The Blacksmith.

We’ve heard whispers for several weeks and, while we still haven’t gotten official confirmation from the current owners, it appears that Players Bar and Grill is ending its long run as a destination for fans of live metal, rock, hip hop. Players is apparently putting on its final shows over the next few weeks, winding down its live music by the end of the month as the new ownership takes the reins at the hard drinking and hard rocking nightclub, according to one local bandleader who ...

Dudley Ducks Labor Day Debate

It’s an American tradition for political candidates to show up at Labor Day picnics, and John Kitzhaber and Chris Dudley both upheld the tradition – but in different cities.
Republican Dudley put in an appearance at a picnic in Bend sponsored by the Central Oregon Labor Council. His Democratic rival John Kitzhaber attended one put on by the Northwest Oregon Labor Council in Portland’s Oaks Park.

The words “local” and “sustainable” have been on the tips of food-centric tongues lately. Restaurants tout their local meats and produce – some even grow organic vegetables in their own backyards. With the increased popularity of farmers markets and eating local foods, it seems the whole country is jumping on the local food movement bandwagon. Well, except for those w ...

There are so many different routes and loops to ride that it boggles the mind, and that is one reason I have yet to write about a certain “must ride” trail or loop—until now. Bend’s ties to the sport run deep due to local surf stars like Gerry Lopez, and paddle manufacturers Dave and Meg Chun of Kialoa Paddles.

What they should probably also say is: You can’t judge a movie by its poster, which is exactly what I did before I saw The American, starring George Clooney. On the poster, Clooney is running with a gun in his hand with a stern look of concentration on his face. I was expecting an action-packed, James B ...

Oregon’s growing legions of medical marijuana users (numbering 36,380 souls as of July 1) are no doubt accustomed to having their right to legally toke challenged by employers and society – not to mention the federal government. But Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP) patients all of whom have been prescribed the drug by physicians should be ...

Yet rather than being the project of only two incredibly passionate and talented individuals as the article suggested, Common Table has been a community endeavor from the start.
