Oregon Lottery's Addict Problem

E-mail Print PDF

The Oregon Lottery cleaned up its act, eliminating its NFL Sports Action pick ‘em ballot four years ago to appease the NCAA when the state was trying to land an NCAA men’s hoops regional tournament bracket, which it ultimately did. However, the Oregon Lottery, despite its problem gambling PSAs, continues to rake in a huge amount of revenue by exploiting gambling addicts, according a recent piece by The Oregonian.

Sarcastically dubbed a tax on, “people who can’t do math,” lottery games pull in a huge amount of sales – roughly $350 million, according to the Oregonian, from video slots where the odds are always stacked in favor of the house. The proceeds from the lottery help pay for books for school children and land for parks and other chronically under-funded programs in a state that has had its share of budget woes, including an impending fiscal meltdown. But a big chunk of that money comes from gambling addicts whose lives can spiral out of control as a result of the habit. The newspaper looked at three years of records and found that nearly half of the total revenue from video poker comes from 10 percent of players and that those players tend to lose big—to the tune of $500 per month—while fueling their habit.

While the Oregon Lottery likes to tout its contribution as no-cost benefit to the state and its taxpayers, the reality is that someone is picking up the check here. Meanwhile many Oregon corporations continue to skate by with $10 minimum corporate income tax, including 31 last year that had taxable income of more than $1 million, according to Oregon Center for Public Policy. It would be nice if the state could one day get its financial house in order so that Oregonians can have a honest discussion about the unseen costs of the lottery.

I have a current video poker problem and have had for years. Many of my friends do also. we all lose more money than we can't afford and are all on the verge of homelessness. you would think we would stop. The games now are even more addicting than the original poker games and the way they play they are designed to suck you in. they don't let you play very long with out adding more money and when your down to the last spin or two on your cash they throw up something really close to a jackpot. They are mean and evil in the supposedly random way they play. all of us see it and talk about it while we keep putting more money in. I hate the oregon lorttery and those that promote it and I play every chance i get over food, meds, and transportation I will pick out of desperastion to get enough money to pay rent, to have a chance at winning which very seldom is the outcome. I am not alone in this evil cycle and no I don't think I want help. then I'ld have to stop. and the addict doesn't want that. I do but when anyone says lets go play my addict is right there throwing away my last buck. we all think we are soooo stupid and berate ourselves. especially when what we just lost, everything, makes us physically sick to our stomaches. but get the notion to play telling ourselves we will cash out this time and not put it right back in we do it again and again and again. we all wish they were never put here in oregon. although we still love to play hate to play. There has to be thousands of people walking around this state in this messed up state of mind. Trying to figure out how they are now going to pay back, pay for, replace whatever money they lost. I have no more gold jewelry left to sell or anything of value. I was so happy to get some tax money back to fix the broken motor in my truck! then thought maybe i can increase the amount a bit so to have something left over. and guess what I lost it all in an hour and a half. so Now I still have no transportation to aid in my job search which is partially due to my employer being affraid that my gambling would lead to (borrowing ) from him, and he not wanting to take that chance after 12 years of working for him. I don't believe i would have ever taken any thing from him and never did. but the idea that I might at some desperate point got stuck in his head. I've been unemployed for 4 months now. I get 200 a week unemployment benefits and have lost all 200 the day it came more than once or twice. I hate myself for it everty time I lose everything in my pocket , my stash at home, and my entire bank account. I am not alone. YES WE HAVE A SERIOUS SOCIAL GAMBLE PROBLEM IN OREGON; AND THOSE THAT ARE LOSING THE MOST ARE THE ONES WHO CAN LEAST AFFORD TO LOSE IT !!!! we are all the most desperate to find away to survive and maybe have a brief moment out of poverty. I was doing just fine financialy until I started to play video poker. I hate myself for it I am ashamed of the lack of control, and I still play.
