Jonathan Heiliger, Facebook’s vice president for technical operations, was in town yesterday, and he said an astonishing thing.

“I think Bend has the potential to be as good as Palo Alto – if not better,” Heiliger told the crowd at the Bend Venture Conference. He said there’s a “robust investment community in Bend” that could turn it into a hub of high-tech innovation similar to the San Francisco suburb where David Packard and Bill Hewlett launched the tech revolution in Packard’s garage.

Central Oregon probably can attract more high-tech investment and industry, and I hope it does, but let’s not get carried away with this “next Palo Alto” business.

Palo Alto has a few things going for it that Bend does not. It is about a 20-minute drive away from a major city. It is home to one of the world’s great universities (Stanford) and just across the bay and down the road from another great university (Berkeley). It has access to a huge pool of very smart, highly educated people with every technical skill imaginable.

It also has access to a huge pool – make that a huge lake – of money. According to the website city-data.com, Palo Alto had an estimated median household income in 2008 of $108,020. (Bend’s was $51,592.) The median house or condo value was $1,338,628. (In Bend it was $345,200.)

But Palo Alto is barely middle-class compared to other nearby communities like Menlo Park, Atherton and Los Altos Hills.

And, unlike Bend, Palo Alto really does have 300 days of sunshine a year.

So the chances of Bend turning into the next Palo Alto appear rather slim. But then, do we really want it to?

Speaking for myself, I can do without the traffic, pollution and other headaches of life in Silicon Valley – including the culture of non-stop hurry and hustle. (When somebody asked Heiliger what sports he was into, he replied: “I work all the time. That's what people do where I'm from.”)

Many of us remember when Bend was being touted as “the next Aspen,” and we know how that turned out. Maybe instead of always dreaming about being “the next Someplace Else” we should focus on being the best Bend we can be.

Typical Ass back words thinking. You guys must be cheering about the 17% unemployment in Crook County. You have run the cattle out of the hills and shut the forests down. I think us Oregonians are about to get our fill of you guys. Maybe one or two strung up for good measure out to do.

Clowns to my left and jokers to my right.

I just moved here to get away from the Palo Alto area after living there for many years, so please none of this talk about Bend being the next Palo Alto!

OH and BTW, Bend has something that Palo Alto doesn't....nice people.

You were too hard on Palo Alto. West Palo Alto - the good part - is just a really nice suburban area with the beautiful Stanford campus. Other Hi Tech research facilities up against the hills. No traffic worse than any other suburban area as long as you stay off the freeway. No pollution. Really beautiful place to live. Too expensive for me though.

Bend was ruined years ago by all those who moved here and decided to change it into the place they came from, mainly southern california. I grew up in Bend and all my kids were born and raised here but there are very few "natives" around anymore and those that are still here really dislike what Bend has become. It is called "LA North" by alot of people, and that is not a compliment.

HBM, we get it already. You think Bend/Central Oregon sucks. You never miss an opportunity to remind us.

Facebook locates a new facility here. That's pooh-poohed in your blog. Facebook decides to expand adding two more faclities and more than 150 permanent jobs (per KBNW radio newscast on 10/15) and nothing blogged yet but you'll find something wrong.

Then Bend gets ranked by Forbes magazine as the number 7 best small city for a business and in your blog, you think the Forbes writers were smoking something. Yet you then cited a similar Forbes article in a blog a few days later as a most trustworhty source when it was used to promote your political viewpoint (hypocrite).

So here's another honor just bestowed on Bend for you to mock. Bend has recently been ranked as one of ten great places to retire in the US.

http://finance.yahoo.com/retirement/article/111018/great-places-to-retire?mod=retire-planning

I'm sure you'll find something or someway to discredit this ranking/article. Let us all know. We can hardly wait for your uplifting remarks.

And Bend will never have East Palo Alto to contend with either. Due to the lack of minorities. There's alot of things Bend may become. But coming from the Bay Area myself, I know a thing or two about Palo Alto.

"You think Bend/Central Oregon sucks."

It doesn't suck, but it has an exaggerated opinion of its own wonderfulness.

"Facebook decides to expand adding two more faclities and more than 150 permanent jobs"

That's good news.

"Bend has recently been ranked as one of ten great places to retire in the US. I'm sure you'll find something or someway to discredit this ranking/article"

Did you notice that each of the blurbs about the "10 Great Places" contained an ad for a house for sale, and that all of the quotes came from realtors? That "article" on Yahoo is nothing but an advertising puff piece.

Man, that was too easy.

"No traffic worse than any other suburban area as long as you stay off the freeway."

Yeah, but you can't get anywhere without going on the freeways.

"No pollution."

I'd dispute that.

"Really beautiful place to live."

Yes, it is a beautiful town. Most towns that are full of rich people are.

"Too expensive for me though."

Or me.

Heiliger was blowing smoke up our collective derriere. The only things Facebook loves about Central Oregon are the fiber-optic bandwidth availability, our cold, dry climate, and the cheap power and land we're willing to give them. Other than that, we're still the middle of nowhere, inhabited by a bunch of backwoods hicks who are impressed by name dropping and highly susceptible to inept, ridiculously transparent flattery.

If backward thinking people like HBM were in control we would still be riding horses. Since you have yours then to bad for all the unemployed and homeless people we see here in Bend. Get your head out of the sand.

Palo Alto is an elite and snobby place on the west side of US 101....then there is the east side of Palo Alto on the east side of 101. A bombed out mess that looks like the some of the worst parts of Detroit.....even the social engineers at Stanford ignore it existence.
